MOTs: What You Need to Know
Owning a car can be a confusing jumble of obligation and responsibility. There’s a lot you need to keep on top of and this goes doubly for MOTs. If you’ve never been through the process of organising an MOT for your car, then it can be a daunting prospect. Wyatt Auto Services are here to help with this guide to MOTs, so you know what to expect when inspection time rolls around.
When to get an MOT:
An MOT is an annual procedure – your pass certificate will last for 12 months from the previous MOT expiry date. An MOT can be carried out at any time, but the next expiry date will change if taken more than 28 days before the upcoming expiry date. A vehicle’s first MOT should take place when the vehicle reaches three years of age – then every year following.
What is Checked:
The MOT test is a thorough inspection of important vehicle components to test whether or not they are operating within legal standards. Most faults found during an MOT can be prevented through simple maintenance of your vehicle, so checking the tyres, lights and wipers beforehand could prevent failure. Dozens of checks are carried out on items like: brakes, mirrors, lights, tyres, wipers, exhaust, horn, battery and windscreen.
The test might be more thorough than you think. For example, stickers on the windscreen which obscure the driver’s view will be cause for failure, as will your screen wash not being fully topped up, and even the presence of clutter could decide whether you pass or not. These things might seem trivial, but they are simple to rectify before the test, so taking some extra care in advance is definitely worth it.
The MOT does not guarantee the general mechanical condition of your vehicle, so it won’t cover the engine, gearbox or clutch. A service will need to be carried out on your vehicle to cover these components.
What is the Cost:
MOTs have a capped cost, so test stations can only charge up to a certain amount for an MOT. This is based on the type of vehicle. The maximum fee for a car is £54.85, and £29.65 for a motorbike. Wyatt Auto Services provide competitive MOT prices, so get in touch for a quote today.
In Case of Failure:
If your car happens to fail its MOT, you will receive a list of things that need fixing before it can be legally driven on the roads again. You can receive a partial retest if you leave the vehicle at the test centre for repairs and no additional fee is charged for retests at the same centre, provided it is performed within 10 working days of the initial test.
Wyatt Auto Services offer a ‘fix while you wait service’ so you can get back on the road as quickly as possible if your vehicle should fail its MOT.
Every vehicle in the UK is required by law to be tested annually to ensure total compliance with environmental requirements and road worthiness standards. A vehicle cannot be driven without a valid MOT. If it has run out and you are caught driving on the roads, then you can be prosecuted. This will also invalidate your car insurance. You are only permitted to drive a car with an expired MOT if you are driving it to undergo an MOT test.
